This winter, we are working on our writing traits to organize and write detailed stories with excellent word choice, Exploring different types of writing, from stories and legends to non-fiction to poetry, we are getting a sense of how diverse our expression of language can be!
We continue to focus on developing good habits as readers by choosing good-fit books (books that fit our purpose for reading, captivate our interest, that we understand and that we know most of the words to) and building our stamina reading to ourselves. We have been doing buddy reading with the grade 4's in 4A for some extra coaching and support with our reading strategies.
Every week we have a list of words that we are focused on practicing and memorizing to help us become better readers and writers! The spelling quiz happens every Thursday morning so remind your great grade 2 to study!
Phonics, grammar and printing skills are practiced throughout the week.
Writers workshops and journaling are vital to success as a writer and are a great outlet for our creative energy. We are exploring examples of fiction and non-fiction writing and have some of our own in the works!
Science: Small Crawling and Flying Creatures
Bugs are all around us and what better way to understand them than to get up close and personal! We will be studying bugs through exploration of their appearance, their habits, what they eat, how they move, how they connect with other living and non-living things on the planet, studying their adaptations and more!
Through authentic studies and research-based learning, we will delve into the world of small crawling and flying creatures, learning about the differences between mollusks, insects, anthropods and annelids, and categorizing them according to different attributes.
This unit will be heavy in Language Arts focus. Students will be producing their own informative booklets about bugs as well as some fictional stories. We are buzzing with excitement over bugs!!!
Math: Adding and Subtracting to 100
We will be continuing to work on adding and subtracting numbers to 100 all the way through June to ensure that all students have a firm grasp of the concepts. For those who have a solid understanding, we will be challenging them with work that they will be meeting in grade 3! A little taste of what is to come!
We are sharing strategies like making ten, one or two more, mental math and doubles to help us become speedy and accurate in our number operations. Numbers have never been so much fun!
Check on the homework page for some links to math websites and games for your child can practice their skills!
We also will be doing data analysis as a yearlong theme. Please help us out by participating in the weekly survey on this page. Our class will come up with a weekly question and we will compare and discuss the results in class!
Social Studies: Looking at Work
As we continue to study Saskatoon, Meteghan and Iqaluit, we shift focus from the physical places and the people who live there and look at natural resources and jobs. We will compare this to the natural resources and jobs found in the UAE and the plethora of other countries that 2J students originated from. This adds an interesting dynamic to conversation as we can compare, contrast and appreciate how geography, culture, language, heritage, industry and economics, and natural resources change over time and shape communities.
Spend some time talking with your child about the way the culture in the UAE has shaped your lives and experiences.
There is so much to learn from one another! Social Studies opens windows and doors to the beautiful, profound and interesting perspectives of each and every child!
